Christian McCaffrey's calf/Achilles tendinitis continues to linger into week two, but should the 49ers be worried?
When McCaffrey was listed as inactive on Monday night, Niner fans and Fantasy owners were shocked. McCaffrey has been dealing with this injury since the beginning of training camp and it has kept him off of the
playing field since then.
McCaffrey spoke to reporters saying, "There's been weeks where I'll go the full week, not even feeling good enough to do the walk-through, and then I wake up and the body's capable of a lot of cool things. Mentally, I'm always prepared to play, and then I woke up and it was a group decision, a very tough one. I hate not playing, but I look at it as a chess move and something that hopefully you can benefit from the rest of the season," via ESPN.
Luckily, the 49ers' RB2, Jordan Mason, stepped in and shined for the 49ers on primetime TV. San Francisco did not miss CMC's presence as Mason rushed for 147 yards with one touchdown on 28 attempts. According to Mason, this was the most carries he's had since high school. The undrafted running back looked like a star against a top-tier Jets defense, averaging 5.3 yards per carry.
After Mason's performance, the 49ers should feel good about the running back starting against the Vikings on Sunday if McCaffrey is a no go.
McCaffrey has been a limited participant at practice the past two days and has said, "My mentality is I'm playing this week," via ESPN.
The 49ers need to play it smart with McCaffrey's injury and look at the grand scheme of things. This is the best time for McCaffrey to be out with injury in the season; allowing Mason to do his thing and let CMC fully recover with no concerns before he returns.
The last 49er to suffer from Achilles tendinitis ended up blowing out his other achilles in the Super Bowl-- Dre Greenlaw. I do not think the 49ers want a repeat of that with the reigning OPOY.
